ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM (MAY TO OCTOBER)
"A COMMUNITY IN ACTION FOR MOUNT ROYAL"
Since 1998, Les amis de la montagne have been committed to a series of environmental activities and educational programs to raise awareness about the importance of Mount Royal’s natural environment. In keeping with the objectives of the City of Montreal’s Mount Royal Protection and Enhancement Plan, Les amis de la montagne created the Environmental Stewardship Program in order to support owners and managers of the mountain in their efforts to take an active part in the conservation of the mountain’s natural environment.

The Environmental Stewardship Program invites all members of the Montreal community – youth and adults, individuals, groups and corporations – to take concrete action in favour of the protection of our natural environment within an overall approach of environmental education.
All proposed activities are supervised by professionals and are in line with a scientific, research-based process aimed at increasing knowledge of the natural environment and intervention methods for its conservation.
- Planting indigenous trees and shrubs
- Conservation activities:
- Establishing the growth and survival rates of trees planted since 2003
- Cutting invasive species that affect the biodiversity of Mount Royal’s forests
- Evaluating the controls taken to combat invasive plants
Join the growing list of companies and organizations that have participated in the program - the time is now to take action to preserve your mountain!
For individuals (departure from Smith House in Mount Royal Park):
- Every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. beginning August 7th
Reservations are required. For more information and applicable fees for companies, please contact Claude Drolet by calling 514 843-8240, ext. 242.

“BunnyHop.ca”: a new site for mountain bikers in Montreal
Mountain biking enthusiasts in Montreal now have a virtual meeting place thanks to the creation of BunnyHop.ca, a new blog dedicated to the 50,000 cyclists who practice this sport on a weekly basis. The content of the site will be oriented towards awareness-raising in order to help change the negative image that Montrealers have of mountain bikers, to unite and to mobilize the mountain biking community and to demonstrate to decision-makers that the sport of mountain biking in Montreal requires a concrete and long-term sustainable solution, such as a dedicated site or installations for the practice of the sport on the island.

Les amis de la montagne launched an important project in October 2007 to control the practice of mountain biking on Mount Royal in order to protect the natural environment from disturbances caused by the practice of this sport. Moreover, in 2008, Les amis produced a study providing data on the actual situation on the mountain and identified sites that could be developed specifically for the practice of mountain biking in Montreal (see below). Les amis, who continue their work on this issue through awareness-raising campaigns with cyclists and the general public on Mount Royal, supports the cycling community in its endeavours to advance the project through concrete solutions in collaboration with municipal authorities.
Mountain biking in the city: finding paths towards sustainable solutions
Les amis de la montagne launched an important intervention project to manage mountain biking on Mount Royal in 2007-2008.
The project was carried out in the following stages:
- Analyse the areas of the mountain where the sport is practiced and develop a profile of the clientele on the mountain;
- Identify and implement specific solutions to the practice of mountain biking;
- Lead a vast awareness-raising campaign aimed at cyclists and the general public; and
- Restore the damaged sites on Mount Royal.
Watch the video below for more information on Les amis' intervention project.
