The conservation of Mount Royal's natural environment

Resolute Forest Products partners with Les amis de la montagne

Montreal, February 13, 2013 – Les amis de la montagne and Resolute Forest Products, a global leader in the forest products industry, have joined to announce a new partnership that supports the organization in the development of two important projects in support of the conservation of Mount Royal’s natural environment, “May, Mount Royal Month”, and the new “Seeds of the future for Mount Royal and a greener city” program.

Robert Fortier, Co-chair of Les amis de la montagne’s annual campaign and Vice-President, Finance and CFO, Astral Media Inc., received a cheque in the amount of $50,000 from Richard Garneau, President and CEO of Resolute Forest Products, during a ceremony on December 5, 2012, at Resolute’s head office in Montreal before an assembly of employees and in the presence of Sylvie Guilbault, Executive Director of Les amis de la montagne. This cheque represents the first of two instalments towards a total contribution of $100,000.
“Les amis de la montagne is dedicated to organizing activities involving the community in the improvement of Mount Royal’s biodiversity, and to do so, we seek partners capable of helping us realize our mission,” said Peter A. Howlett, C.M., President of Les amis de la montagne. “We are pleased to count upon the support of Resolute Forest Products in the growth of our conservation activities on Mount Royal, a unique site in North America.”
“Resolute has close to 400 employees in Montreal and we are pleased to support Les amis de la montagne in their objective of protecting Mount Royal, one of the most important symbols of our metropolis,” said Richard Garneau, President and CEO of Resolute Forest Products. “The young trees planted by Les amis de la montagne will beautify our environment while trapping greenhouse gases, which demonstrates the importance of planting for an environment like Mount Royal, but also for Quebec’s greater forest garden. We are very proud of this new partnership that is in keeping with our own commitment to sustainable development.”
“May, Mount Royal Month” is the original idea of Les amis de la montagne, organized jointly with the Ville de Montréal, in partnership with the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and now, Resolute Forest Products. Activities in May are an invitation to the community to discover the mountain and to take an active part in its enhancement.
The “Seeds of the future for Mount Royal and a greener city” program was launched in collaboration with the Société de verdissement du Montréal métropolitain (Soverdi) and the Université de Montréal with the purpose of creating an urban tree farm with an educational mission. This initiative involves the participation of several hundred school children from Montreal in the growing of indigenous trees from seeds collected on the mountain. Once the trees are large enough, they will be planted back on the mountain or elsewhere in the city.
Les amis de la montagne is a charitable organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of Mount Royal through community involvement and environmental education. The organization is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of citizens and representatives of Montreal’s business community, and benefits from the support of nearly 200 Governors, or ambassadors of the organization, representative of different sectors of our community, who contribute to the mission of the organization in accordance with their interests and their means.
