May 2014: Mount Royal Month: A 10th year of discoveries, conservation initiatives and renewed commitments

A 10th year of discoveries, conservation initiatives and renewed commitments

Montreal, May 1st, 2014– Mount Royal Month is 10 years-old! Dedicated to the enhancement and conservation of Mount Royal, symbol of Montreal’s identity, May is the occasion to celebrate the mountain while reaping the benefits of this green space in the heart of our city. It’s an invitation to discover the mountain’s heritage assets, take part in its conservation and renew our collective commitment to preserve and care for the mountain.

“Montréal recognizes the unique value of this emblematic site that is Mount Royal and its firm commitment to protect it. I invite Montrealers to do the same by participating in large numbers in the activities organized for the conservation of this jewel’s natural and historic heritage that belongs to all of us,” said the Mayor of Montreal, Denis Coderre.

“The year 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of Mount Royal Month, a month of discoveries, of taking action and also of underlining the community’s role in protecting the mountain over the years. This anniversary is also the time to collectively consider the mountain’s future. Throughout the month of May, I encourage all Montrealers to take part in the activities organized over the four corners of Mount Royal to celebrate this special 10th anniversary year!” added Peter A. Howlett, C.M., President of Les amis de la montagne.

“In May, there is nothing more fun and easy than to actively participate in the protection and enhancement of Mount Royal,” added Stéphan Bourbonnais, Executive Vice-President and Regional Manager for Eastern Canada, TD Wealth Management, and Chairman of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. “I invite everyone to celebrate the 10th anniversary of May: Mount Royal Month which offers a variety of activities that allow us to take action, while raising awareness about the richness of Montreal’s natural environment.”

“The activities organised throughout Mount Royal Month reminds all Montrealers of the importance to invest immediately in our collective future,” said Richard Garneau, President and CEO, Resolute Forest Products. “The values that we celebrate throughout May are values that Resolute shares. Through sustainable forestry practices and by finding the right balance among environmental, social and economic needs, our decisions today are taken in consideration of the generations that follow. Resolute is a very proud supporter of Les amis de la montagne and Mount Royal Month.”

The month of May has great promise! Under the theme, “All green and in good health,” the community is invited to participate in the great spring clean-up during the 23rd Corvée du Mont-royal.

As part of the opening ceremonies of this year’s Corvée clean-up, the Ville de Montréal and Les amis de la montagne will pay tribute to the late Frédéric Back, this year’s recipient of the Prix du Mont-Royal, awarded posthumously. Frédéric Back, who died on December 24, 2013, was an illustrator, filmmaker and pioneer of the ecological movement. He was a man committed to the protection of the environment since the early 1960’s and expressed his concern for the cause through his artistic creations.

The calendar of Mount Royal Month activities also features conferences and guided walks on the fragility of the exceptional mountain flora and Mount Royal’s fascinating history since the presence of the Amerindians. The mysteries of Beaver Lake will also be revealed to the public following the discovery of paleoecological findings.

At the summit, the awakening of nature in springtime becomes synonymous with culture. The majestic Chalet du Mont-Royal will host several important artistic events. The 5th edition of the Festival Chromatic will take up residence to showcase the multidisciplinary works of up-and-coming talent. The very dynamic soprano, Natalie Choquette, will officially host the 2nd annual Dimanches en musique free concert series, featuring the young talent of the music schools found on Mount Royal.

For the little ones, special activities are planned: the Journée de la nature will unveil the many secrets of the northern summit and the Journée Chromatic Junior will provide children the opportunity to let their creative juices flow!
