SPOTLIGHT ON ORNITHOLOGY AS PART OF “MAY 2012: MOUNT ROYAL MONTH”

Photo : Jean-Guy Morisset

Montrealers are invited to discover the mountain’s winged fauna this week through a lecture, a guided walk and a photography exhibit, as Mount Royal Month activities continue.

Take advantage of the upcoming long weekend to stop by Maison Smith, where there will also be an exhibit of children’s drawings, inspired by the elementary school students’ visits to the mountain this year.

The welcoming atmosphere of the Café des Amis’ terrace will be enhanced by the melodies of a duo of violinists on Sunday, May 20, in the afternoon.

Herewith the details:

LECTURE: THE SPRINGTIME ARRIVAL OF BIRDS ON MOUNT ROYAL
Partner: Les Belles Soirées de l’Université de Montréal
Presented by André Cyr, PhD, retired professor of ecology and ornithology at the Université de Sherbrooke. Discover the migratory habits, behaviours and songs of a variety of birds, complemented by the lecturers’ photographs and birdsong imitations.

GUIDED WALK: BIRD OBSERVATION ON MOUNT ROYAL
The return of springtime is ideal for bird-watching on Mount Royal, a stopping point for migratory birds. More than 180 species frequent the mountain during this time of year. Discover some of these bird species in the company of an ornithologist from Les amis de la montagne. Bring your binoculars!

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT: THE BIRDS OF MOUNT ROYAL
“BETWEEN SKY AND MOUNTAIN, AN HOMMAGE TO OUR WINGED BEAUTIES”

Exhibit presented by Jean-Guy Morisset and other invited photographers, Pierre Bannon, Yves Déry, Chuck Kling, Samuel Montigné and Claude Morin.

EXHIBIT OF CHILDREN’S DRAWINGS: THE FOREST AND ITS INHABITANTS THROUGH THE CHANGING SEASONS
This exhibit features drawings of Mount Royal’s flora and fauna created by 20 elementary school classes, participants of the La forêt et ses habitants au rythme des saisons project held from October 2011 to May 2012. This project is part of the Une école montréalaise pour tous program of the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport du Québec, in partnership with Les amis de la montagne and the SPVM.
