Mount Royal is much more than just its park; the mountain is central to the genius loci of the metropolis. The mountain territory is also humanized, encircled by great institutions and major transportation corridors.

As part of “May 2011: Mount Royal Month”, Les amis de la montagne, the Ville de Montréal and a variety of partners are collaborating on the creation of an artistic, ephemeral intervention that is both playful and festive, in order to question the accessibility to Mount Royal, especially on its south-western flank, on a site located at Avenue Cedar and Chemin de la Côte-des-Neiges intersection.

The “Belvédère Éphémère” project provides a unique opportunity to intervene directly on Mount Royal, to extend beyond usual planning methods and to breathe the winds of positive change along the mountain’s periphery. The event will be held on the weekend of May 14-15, 2011 (postponed to May 28-29, in case of rain).

The ephemeral lookout project is aimed at rallying the community around this important question of accessibility in order to contribute to its eventual planning and possible reconfiguration. This event is also the occasion to provide Montreal’s planners and designers of tomorrow with a remarkable canvas upon which to express their vision and ideas to the entire community, thereby increasing their attachment to this unique landmark, symbol of our city.

The organizing committee is searching for 10 teams of artists/designers. Teams will be required to create works of public art directly on-site related to the lookout theme that reinterprets the language associated with urban planning, architecture and landscape architecture.

Teams have until April 15, 2011, to submit a proposal.

“May 2011: Mount Royal Month” is the original idea of Les amis de la montagne, organized jointly with the Ville de Montréal, thanks to the support of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.
