Montreal, April 13, 2010 – Les amis de la montagne have received a recognition award from the 2010 Gala de reconnaissance en environnement et développement durable de Montréal for their Environmental Stewardship Program. The announcement was made today before 600 people at the Marché Bonsecours. Les amis de la montagne shares this recognition with the Bureau du Mont-Royal of the Ville de Montréal for their project to restore and enhance biodiversity in an urban environment.
The Environmental Stewardship Program is an offshoot of the Corvée du Mont-Royal mountain clean-up, organized by Les amis de la montagne for the last 20 years. As the Corvée gained in popularity each year and as mountain users became increasingly conscientious about littering, Les amis de la montagne decided in 2007 to extend volunteer participation through other conservation activities within a more global stewardship initiative. This new program includes tree planting, the cutting of exotic invasive species and a variety of environmental studies that orient future projects. A variety of groups have become involved in these actions, such as the TD Bank Financial Group that has played a major role in the success of the program as Les amis’ principal partner.

Created in 2007, the Gala de reconnaissance en environnement et développement durable de Montréal is organized by the Conseil regional de l’environnement de Montréal with the Conférence régionale des élus de Montréal and the Ville de Montréal for the partners in Montreal’s first strategic plan for sustainable development. This annual event underlines the accomplishments of the Montreal companies and institutions that distinguish themselves through innovative projects that combine economic development and protection of the environment.
