MAY 2013: MOUNT ROYAL MONTH
AN OCCASION FOR ALL TO DISCOVER AND CONSERVE THE MOUNTAIN
Montreal, May 1st, 2013 — Josée Duplessis, member of the Executive Committee of the Ville de Montréal, responsible for sustainable development, the environment, large parks and green spaces, and Peter A. Howlett, C.M., President of Les amis de la montagne, invite citizens to participate in the diverse enhancement and conservation activities for our mountain offered as part of the 9th edition of Mount Royal Month that unfold throughout the month of May.
The Corvée mountain clean-up, projects to explore the theme of biodiversity and connectivity, activities to discover the mountain’s built heritage, exhibitions and concerts, and activities presented by the mountain’s great institutions – that’s what “May 2013: Mount Royal Month” has in store for all Montrealers! The original idea of Les amis de la montagne, Mount Royal Month is realized jointly with the Ville de Montréal, thanks to the generous support of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and Resolute Forest Products.
“Mount Royal is an exceptional natural heritage that all Montrealers can be proud of. Our Mount Royal Protection and Enhancement Plan has allowed us to establish a foundation for the preservation, protection and enhancement of our mountain. That said, it is always relevant to raise the awareness of citizens and our partners of Mount Royal’s challenges and the necessity to collectively care for the mountain,” said Josée Duplessis.
“Every year, Les amis de la montagne declares May, “Mount Royal Month”, alongside the Ville de Montréal. Held each spring during the season of renewal, the objective of Mount Royal Month is to underline the community’s participation in the actions undertaken to conserve the mountain’s natural environment, to highlight the discovery of its heritage elements and to raise awareness of its protection challenges. Les amis de la montagne extend an invitation to the entire community to participate in Mount Royal Month, with its terrific choice of educational and participative activities,” said Peter A. Howlett.
“Mount Royal Month is an excellent occasion to inform the population of the mountain’s environmental challenges. Since 1990, the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation have supported a multitude of environmental projects that aim to raise awareness about the environment, the greening of the urban milieu and the augmentation of biodiversity, as well as energy conservation. It was therefore perfectly natural for us to collaborate with Les amis de la montagne in this project, which we have supported since 2009,” said David Pinsonneault, Senior Vice President, Commercial Banking, Quebec and Atlantic and Vice-Chair, Team Quebec, TD Bank Group.
“Resolute Forestry Products is proud to support the activities and festivities of Mount Royal Month. Our association with Les amis de la montagne is the result of the values we share for the protection and conservation of our forests. Mount Royal is an incredible site, in the very heart of the city, where you can enjoy time with friends or family. Many employees from our head office in Montreal take advantage of the mountain’s trails and services, and we felt the need to do more to ensure that the site remains a living, educational and recreational environment,” said Richard Garneau, President and CEO.
The activities of “May 2013: Mount Royal Month” are also made possible thanks to the participation of the STM as Silver partner; Fontaine Santé and C4 as Bronze partners; and Rouge 107,3 FM, CJAD 800 AM and La Presse, as Media partners, as well as numerous mountain institutions, collaborators and partners.
