Les amis de la montagne, in collaboration with the Ville de Montréal, invite you with family or friends to experience the thrill of outdoor activities this winter on Mount Royal, Montreal’s incomparable winter sports paradise in the heart of the city. Skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or sliding: whatever your desire or level, live your passion and discover the pleasures of winter in the most accessible and enchanting of mountain surroundings.

A host of activities awaits you in the Beaver Lake sector of the park, in addition to the usual warm welcome at the Café Smith (new – snack on our delicious waffles!) and nature-boutique at Smith House. Original activities have been added to the line-up of wintertime favourites – all the more reason to appreciate this uniquely beautiful landscape in our urban midst!

Since Mount Royal is one of Montreal’s favourite family destinations, Les amis de la montagne are offering a new activity package to please all members of the family. Offered every Saturday from January 15 to March 5, 2011, families are invited to Smith House to strap on a pair of Les amis’ snowshoes and, from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., follow our guide along the flanks of the mountain in search of animal tracks and bird songs. Families can then spend the rest of the afternoon sliding on our specially designated inner-tubes tracks. Children must be 8 years-old. Package: 1 parent + 1 child = $20, 2nd parent + $8, each additional child $6 (maximum 4 children per adult).

The guided By the light of the city snowshoe walks, which are held every Saturday evening from January 8 to March 12, 2011, will be featured with a twist for “New Year’s on the Mountain” on Thursday, December 30, 2010. The $25 per person registration includes snowshoe rental, animation and sparkling wine. And on Saturday, February 12, 2011, a romantic “Valentine’s Soirée on the Mountain” will feature mulled wine and chocolate, for $22 per person, snowshoe rental and animation included.

The Club de ski de fond des Amis de la montagne returns for a third year with the Jackrabbit initiation courses in cross-country skiing for children 6 to 10 years old. The cost is $230 and includes rental boots, skis and poles (or $185 without rental equipment). A preliminary evaluation session will be followed by 7 classes of 1.5 hours each on 8 consecutive Saturday mornings beginning January 8 to February 26, 2011. To reserve, call us at 514 843-8240, ext. 0.

The following all-time favourite activities will again be available: inner-tubing on the hill near Beaver Lake with free tobogganing nearby, skating on the artificial rink and depending on the weather conditions, on frozen Beaver Lake itself. Outdoor enthusiasts will find all the rental equipment necessary for their mountain adventures at Les amis’ rental counter located on the ground floor of the Beaver Lake pavilion: skates, skis, snowshoes, trekking poles, Nordic kicksled, carrier sled for babies, double-bladed skates and helmets for children and learn-to-skate walkers. A skate sharpening and ski waxing service is also provided.

Finally, the interpretation activity called The Birds of Mount Royal, for all ages will be offered free every Saturday from January 8 to March 12, 2011, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., departing from Smith House. Join a member of Les amis’ conservation patrol for a guided visit of the 7 feeder stations located on the path that circles the summit to spot the cardinals, juncos, woodpeckers and other species that frequent the feeders in winter.

Les amis provides many wintertime programs in environmental education for school groups during the week, including special half-day packages combining outdoor activities, as well as original outdoor outings for groups of friends or colleagues. To reserve, call us at 514 843-8240, ext. 235.

The printed calendar of winter-spring 2011 events is available at Les amis’ information centres located at Smith House (1260 Remembrance Road), at the Beaver Lake pavilion and the Chalet du Mont-Royal.

To make reservations, call us at 514 843-8240, ext. 0 or send us an email. The calendar of events is also available on Les amis’ website or on the site of the Ville de Montréal’s Grands parcs.
