Volunteering: Environmental Stewardship

Monitoring of Planted Vegetation

Since 1994, Les Amis de la montagne has planted more than 36,000 native trees and shrubs on Mount Royal as part of their Environmental Stewardship Program.  In 2004, a program was initiated to monitor the survival and growth rate of the planted vegetation. These surveys, which are carried out for five consecutive years after planting, provide us with the information we need to improve the effectiveness of our plantations and replace vegetation as needed.

Uprooting of the dog-strangling vine

Dog-strangling vine is a non-native invasive herbaceous plant that generates a number of problems including direct competition with local native species and a negative impact on the monarch butterfly. This activity thus involves pulling up the plants’ root balls and cutting off the pods before they produce mature seeds.
