Special activities for World Migratory Bird Day

Special programing to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day

The month of May heralds the return of our migratory birds, whose melodious songs and colorful nuptial plumage will adorn our visits to the mountain. On May 11th, as part of World Migratory Bird Day, Les Amis invites you to take part in this fun-filled day highlighting the importance of insects for migratory birds and the challenges of declining populations!

Information and educational kiosks will be on site near the Smith House from 10h to 13h. Join us for a day of celebration of this rich bird diversity!

  • 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM: Bird census walk Register here!
  • 10 AM to 11:30 AM: Census and discovery walk: birds and insects Register here!
  • 11:30 AM to 1 PM: Family activity: Insect hunt and seed bomb workshop Register here!

Weather: 

To ensure everyone's safety, we monitor the weather in the days leading up to the activity. Should adverse weather conditions be forecast 24 hours before the activity, it will be cancelled. An email will be sent to inform you.

Cancellation:

The activity will be cancelled in the event of:

  • High probability of thunderstorms
  • Winds and/or gusts over 60 km/h
  • Temperature above 38°C
  • Air quality index over 100

Considering the limited number of places available, please write to us as soon as possible at benevolat@lemontroyal.qc.ca to cancel your registration if an unforeseen event prevents you from taking part in the activity.


Description of the three special activities

BIRD SPECIES CENSUS WALK

  • What: 1.5-hour avian census hike
  • When: May 11, 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
  • Level: Volunteers with a good knowledge of ornithology
    • Note that a more educational hike for the general public is offered at 10AM.

Every year, birdwatchers and nature lovers around the world take part in the Global Big Day, an event organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and eBird which encourages people of all skill levels to spend a day outdoors celebrating the incredible diversity of birdlife. 

As a volunteer, you'll participate in one-and-a-half-hour guided walks led by Les Amis's conservation team. Together, we'll note all the birds we see along the way and then share our precious observations with the scientific community, like thousands of other birdwatchers will be doing.

CENSUS AND DISCOVERY HIVE: BIRDS AND INSECTS

  • What: 1,5-hour hike to discover the birds of Mount Royal and the links between them and insects.
  • When: May 11, 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM
  • Level: General public

Every year, on World Migratory Bird Day, birdwatchers and nature lovers around the globe come together to highlight the importance of migratory birds and raise awareness about habitat conservation. This festive day encourages people of all skill levels to spend a day outdoors, celebrating the incredible diversity of birdlife. This year's theme is insects and their importance to birds.

As a volunteer, you’ll participate in one-and-a-half-hour guided walks led by Les Amis de la montagne's conservation team. Together, we'll discover the birds with which we share our environment, and learn more about their population status and the links between them and insects.

FAMILY ACTIVITY: INSECT HUNTING AND CREATION OF SEED BOMBS

  • What: Discover the insects of Mount Royal and make seed bombs.
  • When: May 11, 11:30 AM to 1 PM
  • Level: All ages (family-oriented)

Every year, on World Migratory Bird Day, birdwatchers and nature lovers around the globe come together to highlight the importance of migratory birds and raise awareness about habitat conservation. This festive day encourages people of all skill levels to spend a day outdoors, celebrating the incredible diversity of birdlife.

This year's theme is insects and their importance to birds. As part of this festive day, we invite you and your family to come and discover the diversity of insects on Mount Royal, and to make seed bombs that will be used to revegetate the forest in order to support this rich diversity!
