New round of tree felling to fight emerald ash borer infestation

Despite all efforts to the contrary, the emerald ash borer continues to ravage Mount Royal and other sectors of the City of Montréal. This is why a new round of winter felling to cut down the trees that have fallen victim to this invasive insect will get under way on January 24. The work, which will take place from Monday to Thursday for the next two weeks, will be concentrated in the swamp sector, i.e., the wetland loop to the west of Kondiaronk Belvedere. About 150 ash trees located within the first 25 metres of the trail edges, on the inner side of the swamp, are to be taken down.

This cut will be “small” compared to the previous four winter cuts, during which 2,500 to 3,000 trees were felled each year.

Impact on users

The operation will disrupt access to some sections of cross-country ski and woodland trails from Monday through Thursday during the weeks of January 24 and 31. The trails will be entirely closed while the work is going but will be open from Friday to Sunday. During this period, it will be even more important to obey the signs and stay on the trail for your own safety, as well as to protect the natural environment.
