Common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) is a Eurasian shrub introduced as a decorative hedge. It grows quickly, produces small black berries, and thrives in a variety of soils. Despite its harmless appearance, this species forms dense thickets that block light, prevent the regeneration of native trees and harm the biodiversity of the undergrowth. Its presence alters the soil balance and slows down the return of local plants. To restore the ecosystems of Mount Royal, its removal is a priority!
For control purposes, we use a manual uprooting technique that requires a tool to remove trees. For this reason, the minimum age to participate in this activity is 14 years old.
Gloves will be provided on site.
